18 April 2024 | Eaton Portland Power Center Tour

The visit to Eaton Portland Power Center will include a tour of the manufacturing lines including the Medium and Low Voltage Switchgear lines and the Motor Control Centers line. Equipment demonstrations to follow!

In addition to the tour, we will learn about typical power distribution components and their applications, about our contact’s role as a field engineer at Eaton, and how he works safely with voltages up to 70,000V!

About your guide

Our industry contact and tour guide at the Eaton facility is John Young. John’s current role at Eaton is as a Senior Field Engineer in the Electrical Engineering Services and Systems department in Power Distribution Systems division. Within this role John and his team support the equipment that Eaton and other competitor vendors manufacture in the power distribution marketplace. The majority of the products are industrial and commercial level designs, including transformers, switches, circuit breakers, protective relays, power meters, variable frequency drives, and many other components which facilitate power flow from the utility to the end user and load applications.

John graduated with a BSc Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University in 2020. His connection to SAE began by working on the Baja SAE project as a freshman learning about the data acquisition system and culminated in his capstone project involving the machining of the cast aluminum transaxle gearbox for the Baja car. We are extremely happy to have John serving as a member-at-large on the SAE Oregon board of directors and was an instrumental planning committee member for the 2023 Baja SAE Oregon competition. Please welcome and thank John when you meet him!
